Looking for a family-oriented community with lots of parks, trails and great schools? Look no further than Scripps Ranch, just east of San Diego. Scripps Ranch residents love the open space in their community plus the recreational benefits of Miramar Lake.

Thousands of acres of rolling hills dotted with groves of pine and eucalyptus make up Scripps Ranch, incorporated in 1970, with plenty of master-planned communities, neighborhood parks and nature trails. Neighborhoods are spacious, well-maintained, and perched along mesas, allowing for an abundance of beautiful countryside views. Scripps Ranch real estate contains Miramar Reservoir and Miramar Lake as popular gathering spots.

The land was originally purchased in the 1890s by EW Scripps (founder of the powerful chain of Scripps newspapers) and his sister, Ellen Browning Scripps. He built a Mediterranean-style home and named it Miramar, after the Archduke Maximilian's castle in Trieste, Italy. Portions of the ranch can still be seen at the Scripps Ranch Swim and Racquet Club.

An inland community, Scripps Ranch is bordered by Scripps-Poway Road on the north; Pomerado Road and Miramar Air Station on the south, and I-15 on the west. The ranch is close to all the major attractions in San Diego but manages to retain its individual charm. Downtown is less than 15 miles away, although a number of residents work nearby at Mirarmar, Rancho Bernardo or Carmel Mountain Ranch.

The majority of homes in Scripps Ranch are comprised of middle-class and upper-middle-class modern homes, many within master-planned communities. Real estate prices are favorable: currently, one-bedroom condos start in the low $200s and two-bedrooms in the low $300s. Detached houses can be found as low as the high-$400's, with prices ranging to nearly $2 million.

Families are attracted to this community due in part to its excellent schools. Scripps Ranch schools are a part of San Diego Unified, with school rankings hovering between the 80th and 90th percentiles. Nearby is Miramar College, offering courses to the community at large; within the ranch is Alliant International University's 60-acre campus.

Many of Scripps Ranch's community activities center on the family, with various sports leagues and Miramar Lake, a popular place for picnics, bike riding, jogging and fishing. Local produce and cuisine is available every Saturday at the Farmers' Market, and at the "Taste of the Ranch" fundraiser held in February.
