Pacific Beach Real Estate
Pacific Beach lies
just south of La Jolla, ten miles north of San Diego along the Pacific Coast
adjacent to Mission Bay. With the development of Mission Bay in the 60s as a
prime recreational area, PB was in danger of being overbuilt with high-rise
apartment buildings and other commercial development.
The residents passed a
30-ft height limit proposition in 1972, and the area was downzoned for density
at about the same time protecting its small town, casual feel.
Many improvements were made to the area in the 1980s including the Promenade
shopping center and Sea Coast Square as well as a number of public projects.
Currently there are 40,000 residents and the area is demographically one of the
youngest in San Diego County.
Many of the
single-family homes in Pacific Beach are cottages that were built in the 1950s.
Some of these cottages have been renovated and expanded, and these are mixed
with the newer Mediterranean-style homes that characterize the tree-lined
streets of Pacific Beach. There are also a number of apartment buildings, and
newer multi-unit condominium complexes.
The Los Altos area of PB, once home to
Kate Sessions who landscaped many of San Diego’s neighborhoods, boasts ranch and Spanish-style houses with terrific views of the Bay
and the Pacific Ocean. Home
prices and owner occupancy tend to be higher in Los Altos and North Pacific
Beach, which is in close proximity to La Jolla.
Pacific Beach
offers good schools, countless restaurants, parks, the Ocean boardwalk, and
lively nightlife.
